MESSAGE FROM THE GRAND CHIEF

DISCOVERING KAHNAWÁ:KE

Only a few minutes away from Montreal, the Kahnawá:ke Mohawk territory reveals numerous historical treasures to be discovered which are really worth making the detour. Kahnawá:ke is known for its culture and history, as well as its social and economic development and projects.

For the last few years, the Mohawk Council of Kahnawá:ke has been supporting local economic development and working on ways to raise and enhance the territory's remarkable tourism potential.

Our tourism projects are modern, keeping the future in mind, while reaffirming our pledge in sustainable development, and preserving our cultural heritage.

This tourism brochure is an important step to welcoming the World to our doorstep. It is our desire to make Kahnawá:ke an important stop in Montreal's tourist circuit.

The Mohawks' presence in the area dates back many centuries. Many historical sites still remain in great condition and are your window to the past: the 17th Century stone church is one such site, as well as the Kateri Tekakwitha Sanctuary, along with the remains of the French Regime and its old fort walls. I am inviting you to discover these historical treasures as well as all the other sites described in this brochure.

Have a pleasant visit in Kahnawá:ke

MESSAGE FROM KAHNAWÁ:KE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION

Welcome. On behalf of the Kahnawá:ke Economic Development Commission, we invite you to visit our community.

Kahnawá:ke boasts a number of historical sites, one of which is the Cenotaph; a stoic monument that honors Kahnawá: ke Soldiers who courageously gave their lives in both world wars and the Korean conflict. Another popular tourist stop is the St. Francis Xavier Mission. The mission contains the shrine of Kateri Tekakwitha, Lily of the Mohawks. Kateri was a young Mohawk woman who is on the threshold of becoming a saint. There are also number of old stone houses in the village area that date back to colonial times, some of which served as quarters for military officers and other officials. One of Kahnawá:ke's old stone houses is a popular Bed and Breakfast with a wonderful view of the mighty Saint Lawrence River. Another important stop would be the Kanien'kehaka Raotitiohkwa Onkwawenna Cultural Center where you will find an extensive library and abundant resources that document our unique cultural heritage.

Don't forget the shopping, dining and recreation. There are over 250 businesses in the community offering a variety of products and services to choose from including four golf courses, several restaurants, gift shops, specialty stores and a marina. Shop Kahnawá:ke Maps are available at www.shopkahnawake.com/tourism/Map.php to help direct you around our community.

We also encourage you to consult the activity calendar and points of interest in this guide when planning your visit to our community.
